GOP Delivers Christmas Present to
Trump with Colorado Election Ruling.
In the
aftermath of the Colorado Supreme Court's decision to exclude Donald Trump from
the state's 2024 primary ballot due to his alleged involvement in insurrection,
a broad spectrum of Republican lawmakers has come out in support of the former
president.
Senator Thom
Tillis, a North Carolina Republican who is not typically considered a staunch
Trump ally, introduced legislation aimed at preventing entities like the
Colorado Supreme Court from making similar rulings in the future. Tillis'
proposal would limit ballot questions to the Supreme Court, which currently has
a conservative majority of six justices.
Senator
Steve Daines, who chairs the Senate GOP's campaign arm and is a steadfast Trump
supporter, announced his intention to write a letter to the US Supreme Court,
urging them to reverse what he called "blatant election interference"
in favor of preserving democracy.
The actions
of these Republican lawmakers have been echoed by other members of Congress who
are eager to defend Trump against what they perceive as politically motivated
attacks. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), for example, shared a post on
social media that suggested Democrats could be banned from future elections for
allowing undocumented immigrants into the country. Greene pledged her support
for this proposal and called on relevant congressional committees to take
action.
Freshman
Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA) also weighed in on the issue, responding to a post
from right-wing pundit Erick Erickson by warning that Democrats would face
retaliation if Republicans did not fight back against what he described as
"precedents" set by the Colorado ruling.
As these developments unfolded, it
became clear that even Republicans who are not typically associated with the
MAGA movement were feeling pressure to align themselves with Trump and his
supporters. The unity displayed by these lawmakers suggests that Trump's
influence within the GOP remains strong, despite his departure from office.
