Newly
Revealed: Republican National Committee takes $1.4 Million from Controversial
Casino Mogul Amidst Allegations of Sexual Misconduct - Previous Pledge to
Reconsider Funding Called into Question
Steve Wynn |
In 2018, the
Republican National Committee (RNC) made a shocking decision to continue
accepting donations from disgraced casino mogul Steve Wynn, despite allegations
of sexual misconduct against him. RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel stated that they
would only return the money if Wynn was found guilty of wrongdoing.
However,
since then, the Nevada Gaming Control Board has revealed that an investigation
found "numerous instances of unwelcome sexual conduct" by Wynn,
including coercing employees into sex and inappropriate comments and touching.
Wynn has repeatedly denied any misconduct.
Despite
this, the RNC has still accepted over $1.4 million from Wynn since McDaniel's
statement in 2018. This is in stark contrast to their response to allegations
against Harvey Weinstein in 2017, when they called on Democrats to return his
donations.
Wynn's
former company, Wynn Resorts, has also had to pay over $75 million in related
settlements and fines. In comparison, the DNC only donated "over
$30,000" in contributions from Weinstein to charity after allegations
against him became public.
Wynn's
recent donations to the RNC and conservative Senate and House candidates have
raised questions about the party's stance on sexual misconduct. The RNC did not
respond to Business Insider's request for comment at the time of publication.
Additionally,
a GOP super PAC called Our American Century appeared to have violated election
law in 2020 by illegally contributing to former President Donald Trump's
reelection campaign. Wynn donated $12.3 million to this super PAC.
The RNC's
decision to continue accepting donations from Wynn despite credible allegations
of sexual misconduct raises serious questions about their commitment to holding
perpetrators accountable and supporting survivors. It remains to be seen
whether they will finally take a stand against Wynn's actions and return his
donations.
